The Dronningruta is one of Norway’s most famous hiking trails – a highlight for visitors to the Vesterålen and a must for anyone who loves nature, history, and adventure. This circular trail connects the charming villages of Nyksund and Stø and offers an unforgettable hiking experience.
The starting and ending point of the Dronningruta is the picturesque Nyksund. Alternatively, you can start in Stø, hike to Nyksund, stay overnight, and complete the loop the next day.
A trail with history
What is now a hiking paradise was once a school route: Children from Nyksund walked this path to attend boarding school in Langenes (near Stø). In 1996, the trail was officially named "Dronningruta" after Norway’s Queen Sonja hiked the route. Since then, it has attracted both hiking enthusiasts and royal fans.
What to expect on the trail:
Duration: 5 to 8 hours – depending on pace and breaks.
Elevation: Up to 450 meters above sea level.
Views: Stunning panoramas of the coastline, open sea, and mountain landscapes.
The Dronningruta is a well-maintained circular trail by Norwegian standards, featuring 10 kilometers over the mountains and a coastal section of 5 kilometers. Whether you want to conquer the mountains or stroll along the coast, you’ll find your perfect hiking adventure here.
Practical tips:
Gear: Sturdy footwear, at least 1.5 liters of water, weatherproof clothing.

Best season: Late May to autumn – the trail is usually free of snow and ice.
The extra touch:
In summer, you can use a water taxi to return to the starting point if you only want to hike the coastal or mountain section. Guided tours are available upon request – perfect for those who want to learn more about the history and nature along the Dronningruta.
