If you’ve made it to our homepage, you’ve probably already heard of Nyksund – a place that tells stories like no other.
Founded around 1850, this small fishing village experienced its heyday in the 1930s during the era of the fish farmers. As an important fishing and trading hub, Nyksund was known far beyond the region.

From Decay to Revival
In the 1960s, infrastructure projects in northern Norway brought significant changes. Many smaller places were abandoned in favor of centralized settlements, and Nyksund was almost entirely deserted. For years, the village fell into a deep slumber, a shadow of its former glory. Only through projects, especially by the University of Berlin, was Nyksund saved from total decay.

A New Beginning
In the mid-1990s, things began to change. During the summer, whale safari boats brought tourists to the sea, but with autumn came silence. Until 1997, when Karl Heinz Nickel and I, Ssemjon, decided to restore Holmvik Brygge. Our goal was to make Nyksund a lively place all year round. By 1999, we were already welcoming our first guests.

A Growing Village
Since those early days, Nyksund has changed significantly. More and more people have made their homes here, more businesses have settled, and the village is thriving. Holmvik Brygge has also evolved: from originally eight rooms with shared bathrooms to now 17 rooms across three buildings, with almost all rooms offering private bathrooms today. Despite this progress, we remain true to our goal: combining authenticity and preserving historical charm with modern comfort.

A Place for Experiences
Nyksund today is more than just a place to stay. It is a base for many activities: boat and fishing tours, whale safaris, hiking, and rafting. Despite this growth, Nyksund remains a place of peace and relaxation. Here, you can see, feel, and even smell the spirit of the fish farmer culture. It is a village that demands time and attention. A place waiting to be discovered.

Come and experience Nyksund. Let yourself be inspired by its history, its nature, and its uniqueness, and above all, by the people who live here today.
